SUMMARY OF CAREER AND SPECIALISED COMPETENCE

Stephen Samuels was initially employed in the Australian Tyre Industry and was subsequently seconded to Monash University where he gained a M.Eng.Sci. degree for research on noise generation. Shortly after, in 1975, he joined the Australian Road Research Board where he progressed to the level of Principal Research Scientist. In 1988, he gained a Ph.D for his work on the noise produced by traffic under interrupted flow conditions. During this period at ARRB he worked on a variety of projects dealing with road design, vehicle performance and the environmental impacts of roads and traffic, with particular specialisation on road traffic noise. From 1990 to 1993 he practiced as an Engineering and Acoustical Consultant, maintaining his involvement in the roads and traffic field, but also dealing with the general areas of outdoor and environmental acoustics. During the period 1993 to 1997 he held an academic position in the Department of Transport Engineering in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of New South Wales. Since the commencement of 1998 he has been operating his own Research and Consultancy Practice with a primary focus on the roads, transportation and environmental sectors. At the same time he was given an adjunct appointment as a research fellow in the UNSW School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, a position which he continues to hold. He joined OLSAN Consulting, Traffic & Forensic as a Principal in late 1998. Currently he is a director of TEF Consulting
